Periodically in this section, we will present information and/or news of general interest to Cowan collectors, dealers and enthusiasts:

    • Return of the Egyptian Maidens

On Feb 20th, 2008 the famous Elsa Vick Shaw tile mural was reinstalled in the Cowan Museum after its extensive restoration. Click here for a description of its history and restoration, authored by Cowan Museum Curator Carol Jacobs.

      Egyptian Maidens Return

    • 120 attendees at “Party for the Egyptian Maidens”

The Associates January 18th fundraiser at RRPL was a “sold out” success, with over 120 at the Reception and Silent Auction.

Food and wine were generously donated by our event sponsor, The Melting Pot. The guitar styling of Michael Manderen provided musical accompaniment to the celebration. The Silent Auction , with 103 Lots of Cowan pottery, and associated collectibles, resulted in spirited bidding and a 95% sold rate for the donated and consigned items.

Click here to view the Silent Auction results.

Overall fundraising outcome exceeded our target and will permit the Associates both to support restoration of the Elsa Vick Shaw designed Egyptian Maidens mural and enhance funding of the R. Guy Cowan Scholarship program.

A big thank you is in order to all attendees and volunteers, plus the staff and trustees of RRPL.

    • Lakewood Students are honorary Cowan Associates

The Discovery Class of 2nd/3rd graders at Grant Elementary School in Lakewood are undertaking a research project on Cowan Pottery, in cooperation with the Lakewood Historical Society. This project involves visits to various local sites associated with Cowan pottery, and interviews to gain more knowledge of the history of Cowan in Lakewood and Rocky River .

The student group is pictured here on a recent visit to the Cowan Museum, where they interviewed curator Carol Jacobs, and were given a tour of the museum. Carol presented the 21 students with honorary membership cards on behalf of Cowan Pottery Museum Associates.

The students were later visited at Grant Elementary by Bill Cowan, grandson of R Guy Cowan. Bill was able to answer many questions about the founding and operation of Cowan Pottery by his grandfather.

Check this link for more information about the Discovery project.

  • R. Guy Cowan Birthday Event

On August 1, 2007  the 123rd birthday anniversary of R. Guy Cowan was celebrated in the RRPL auditorium with a presentation by arts advocate and educator Nina Freedlander Gibans.

Through Ms Gibans’ theme of “The Early World of R Guy Cowan” an enthusiastic group of attendees learned about Guy Cowan’s creative association with Horace Potter, founder of the Potter and Mellon jewelry and fine arts establishment. We were also introduced to the wealth of information on Cleveland artists which is available at the Cleveland Art and History website.         http://www.clevelandartandhistory.org/

The cultural proceedings were followed by sharing a unique birthday cake.  The R Guy Cowan birthday cake was served by retired Museum Curator Sue Brown, watched by present Curator Carol Jacobs.
