    • 2009 Cowan Symposium

Cowan enthusiasts gathered at Rocky River Public Library on May 9th for a varied and stimulating program arranged by Carol Jacobs, curator of the Cowan Museum, and sponsored again by CPMA. Some highlights are noted below and you can view additional pictures from the event by clicking here.

Pictured here, Cleveland Institute of Art ceramics student Melissa Horner was recognized at the Symposium as the 2009/10 recipient of the R. Guy Cowan Scholarship funded by CPMA. Melissa is explaining the techniques used to create the unique crystalline glazes featured in her work.

Sarah Webster Vodrey, Director of the Museum of Ceramics in East Liverpool Ohio, (the birthplace of R. Guy Cowan), presented a wealth of information on the Art Pottery created by many companies in the East Liverpool area. Sarah is shown here accepting an R. Guy Cowan “Logan” vase donated to the East Liverpool Museum collection.

Dee Ann Horstman, curator of the Scio Historical Museum. Explained the fascinating history of  Ohio’s Scio Pottery. Dee Ann’s presentation was enhanced by a comprehensive display of Scio Pottery production. Later production included this Campbell’s Soup mug found in millions of households.

In a session which generated lively discussion and questions, well-known fine arts appraiser and auctioneer Alfred Cali  enlightened attendees about important issues for collectors on the topic of obtaining and maintaining  accurate appraisals of their pottery and other collectibles.

    • CPMA represented at Cleveland Institute of Art Scholarship and Awards Reception

Representatives of Cowan Associates were invited to attend the 2008/09 CIA Scholarship and Awards reception held at the McCullough building on October 27th.

The reception is an opportunity for donors and representatives of donor organizations to meet with CIA student award recipients and faculty. In addition to an address by CIA president David Deming, invitees had an opportunity to meet with their student recipients individually and to see their work and the various projects currently in progress.

Our 2008 R. Guy Cowan Scholarship award winners, Alexandra Marchant and Brendan Barnes, were on hand together with Ceramics department head Bill Brouillard to host a tour of the ceramics studio and show us their work in progress.

Guy Cowan would undoubtedly be proud of the continuing tradition of artistic creativity in ceramics which is nurtured in the CIA program.

Alexandra Marchant, a 2008 R. Guy Cowan Scholarship recipient, explains the techniques she is using in her latest work.

    • 120 attendees at “Party for the Egyptian Maidens”

The Associates January 18th fundraiser at RRPL was a “sold out” success, with over 120 at the Reception and Silent Auction.

Food and wine were generously donated by our event sponsor, The Melting Pot. The guitar styling of Michael Manderen provided musical accompaniment to the celebration. The Silent Auction , with 103 Lots of Cowan pottery, and associated collectibles, resulted in spirited bidding and a 95% sold rate for the donated and consigned items.

    • Lakewood Students are honorary Cowan Associates

The Discovery Class of 2nd/3rd graders at Grant Elementary School in Lakewood are undertaking a research project on Cowan Pottery, in cooperation with the Lakewood Historical Society. This project involves visits to various local sites associated with Cowan pottery, and interviews to gain more knowledge of the history of Cowan in Lakewood and Rocky River .

The student group is pictured here on a recent visit to the Cowan Museum, where they interviewed curator Carol Jacobs, and were given a tour of the museum. Carol presented the 21 students with honorary membership cards on behalf of Cowan Pottery Museum Associates.

The students were later visited at Grant Elementary by Bill Cowan, grandson of R Guy Cowan. Bill was able to answer many questions about the founding and operation of Cowan Pottery by his grandfather.
