In 1930, when Cowan was developing a standard reddish-orange Oriental Red glaze, an unusual event occurred. During the firing process, an ingredient in the glaze caused a black-brown mottled and/or speckled effect to cover the Oriental Red and what resulted was a striking glaze with endless variations that proved to be a very popular seller.
